MANILA, Philippines – Quezon City is in the process of replacing its streetlights with light-emitting diode (LED).

The city council has allowed Mayor Herbert Bautista to sign the contract to purchase the replacements for the old high-pressure sodium light system.

Bautista requested a P20-million budget from the city’s Budget Department to purchase 900 LED lights and control panel systems.

According to a study, a 400-watt bulb from the old light system emits as much light as a 150-watt bulb LED light. The study also showed that switching to LED lights will lower the city’s carbon dioxide emission by 125 tons per year.

Some lights in the center island of Quezon Avenue have already been changed. -- Report from Dexter Ganibe, DZMM.
