Sin monument in Manila unveiled
MANILA - President Noynoy Aquino and Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim unveiled on Friday a monument for Cardinal Jaime Sin in Rizal Park, beside the monuments of former President Corazon Aquino and former Senator Benigno Aquino.
The 8-foot bronze statue, by artist Eduardo Castrillo, was commissioned by Mayor Lim last October.
Castrillo also made the People Power Monument along EDSA.
According to Lim, the statue is worth P500,000, and he assured the public that he used his own personal funds to have the monument built.
He said the late Cardinal was a friend, and his contributions to the EDSA revolt and the country should be commemorated as well.
According to Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, who was the secretary of Cardinal Sin, the Cardinal would have reprimanded him for allowing the monument to be built.
He said the Cardinal does not like events to be focused on him.
Villegas, however, clarified that this monument was not just a tribute to the Cardinal but to the spirit of EDSA, which restored freedom and democracy in 1986.
