MANILA - A soldier returned two checks amounting to almost P350,000, which he found while driving near the Philippine Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig on Wednesday afternoon.

Sgt. Raffy Braga, 38, of Valencia, Bukidnon, has been serving in the Philippine Army for the past 17 years.

The soldier, who is detailed with the office of the Army's assistant chief of staff for civil military operations, said he was on his way back to Fort Bonifacio from an errand when two pieces of paper, with checks attached on them, flew across his vehicle.

The two Land Bank of the Philippines checks, worth P182,702.73 and 165,506.06, are both payable to the order of Manila Water Company.

Army spokesman Lt. Col. Noel Detoyato said Braga contacted a senior non-commissioned officer who then coordinated with the Landback to identify the owner of the checks.

"It was Landbank who informed the owner that the lost checks were found by a soldier of the Philippine Army, and they agreed for the owner to claim them at (Braga's office)," he said.

The Philippine Army has commended Braga for exhibiting "honesty, and for exemplifying integrity and professionalism."
