QC fire kills girl on birthday

MANILA (UPDATE) – A girl who was supposed to celebrate her birthday today died after a fire hit a residential area in Quezon City.

The victim, 9-year-old Ana Relanos, died after fire broke out along 21st Avenue in Cubao, Quezon City shortly before 5 a.m.

The fire, which reached the fifth alarm, was declared out at 6:20 a.m.

Relanos was trapped inside their burning house after a heavy object hit her.

She was born on February 29, 2004, and was supposed to celebrate her birthday today, March 1.

Meanwhile, at least two persons were wounded in the fire which razed at least 30 houses.

70-year-old Dolores Diaz was suffocated by thick smoke while fire volunteer Angel Araja sustained a head injury.

At least 60 families were rendered homeless due to the blaze.

The Bureau of Fire Protection said the fire allegedly started in the house owned by a certain Mendez Sollano and occupied by Erwin Malinao.
