MANILA -- Passengers at the Doroteo Jose station of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT 1) panicked Tuesday afternoon after they saw smoke coming out from one of the train's coaches.

Police Senior Inspector Romeo Rosini, commander of the Alvarez police community precinct, said that upon seeing the smoke, a group of teenagers reportedly shouted that the train caught fire.

This caused panic among the passengers on board the train, which was along the southbound lane approaching the Doroteo Jose station.

Other passengers waiting on the station's platform as well as those buying tickets also panicked, thinking that there was a bomb threat.

But LRT spokesperson Atty. Hernando Cabrera clarified that the train did not catch fire nor did the LRT receive a bomb threat.

Cabrera explained that the brakes of the train just got stuck, causing it to emit smoke.

No one was injured in the incident.

The affected passengers were transferred to another train.

Operations at the LRT Line 1 are now back to normal. -- Report from Zhander Cayabyab, dzMM
