Metro-wide strike to paralyze 100% of public transport

The metro-wide transport strike on Tuesday is expected to paralyze public transportation by 100 percent, according to one of the organizers Monday.

Roberto Martin, Pasang Masda national president, said they would attain a complete public transport stoppage because almost all transport workers have signified their intention to join the strike.

"Based on our numbers, I think there will be 100 percent paralyze (of transport) in Metro Manila and this is not only jeeps but also buses, tricycles, and even truckers will join the strike," Martin told ABS-CBN’s morning show "Umagang Kay Ganda."

He said they see no need to prevent some of the drivers from plying the streets because they have already been informed.

The transport strike will start around 12:01 a.m. of Tuesday until Wednesday of the same time.

Martin also urged the riding public just to stay at home during the strike because they will have difficulty in getting a ride to their

destinations.

Earlier, Orlando Marquez, one of those organizing the strike, said compared to his P700 daily earning as a jeepney operator, an ordinary driver gets a much smaller pay.

Aside from the recent rise in pump prices, organizers said the protest is against Local Government Ordinance 4136 where a traffic violator is being ordered to pay P500 as penalty and an additional 5 percent if he fails to have the amount in a week's time.

They said this clearly shows how they are being made a "milking cow" by the government because traffic enforcers get a 25-percent commission for every penalty.

Drivers and operators said the government should scrap the ordinance being used for the issuance of the Official Violation Receipt (OVR).

The Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers in the Philippines (FEJODAP), meanwhile, said that because of the traffic enforcers' desire to get bigger commissions, they fail to focus on the task of directing vehicular flow and instead, train their attention on would-be violators.

Strike organizers warned the national government that they will have no choice but to mount a nationwide transport holiday if authorities do not heed their call.

Aside from FEJODAP and Pasang Masda, other groups that will reportedly join the transport strike are Pinagkaisang Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytors Nationwide (PISTON), ACTO (Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations), ALTODAP (Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers of the Philippines), MJODA (Makati Jeepney Operators and Drivers’ Association), PASANG-MASDA (Pangkalahatang Sanggunian Manila and Suburbs Drivers Association Nationwide Inc.); bus groups IMBOA (Integrated Metro Bus Operators Association), MMBOA (Metro Manila Bus Operators Association), INTERBOA (Intercity Bus Operators Association) and NEMBOG (Northeast Manila Bus Operators Group); and the Provincial Bus Operators Association of the Philippines (PBOAP), and the Association of Taxi Operators in Metro Manila together with other tricycle and pedicab drivers’ associations.
