1-hr rotating blackouts hit Metro Manila, Calabarzon
MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) announced that its franchise area will be experiencing one-hour rotating blackouts on Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Affected areas include the provinces of Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon, Rizal, where rotating blackouts will last until 4 p.m.
The province of Bulacan and the country's capital Metro Manila will experience blackouts until 7 p.m.
Meralco attributed the lack of enough power supply to the fuel pump sanction troubles of two power generating plants, Malapaya and Sta. Rita.
The two power plants have been going through scheduled maintenance since February. Power supply reserves in Luzon have been thin as demand shoot up during hot months while some power plants are unable to keep up.
Meralco is minority owned by the power arm of the Lopez Group of Companies. ABS-CBN Broadcasting is part of the Lopez Group of Companies, with abs-cbnNEWS.com as its online news arm.

brownout
