Korean mafia member arrested in Manila
A Korean fugitive wanted for a murder attempt eight years ago was arrested in Manila over the weekend, the Bureau of Immigration said Monday.
Arrested on the strength of a mission order issued by Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan was 38-year-old Kim Yeol Gun, who is now detained at the BI jail in Bicutan pending deportation proceedings.
Kim was arrested by joint elements of the BI and PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group last Saturday outside his condominium unit along Roxas Boulevard, Manila .
“We will deport him to Seoul as soon as our BI board of commissioners issues the order for his summary deportation,” Libanan said in a press statement.
He added: “Let this serve as another warning to other foreign fugitives. The Philippines is not a sanctuary for wanted criminals as, eventually, the long arm of the law will catch you."
It was learned that Kim’s Korean passport was already canceled by the Korean embassy, thus he will be deported for being an undocumented and undesirable alien.
Atty. Antonio Rivera, BI deportation unit head, said Kim is wanted to stand trial before the Eujeongbu District Court in Korea which had issued a warrant for his arrest. Rivera said Kim was charged for attempting to kill a Korean named Roh, who used to be his man in a crime syndicate.
Kim allegedly kidnapped Roh on May 16, 2000, brought him to a mountain place in Gyunggi province and struck him with a baseball bat before burying his body up to the neck.
Kim, however, did not kill Roh as the latter had begged for his life but the suspect continued to blackmail his victim and even rob the latter’s money.
Rivera also bared that Kim is the subject of numerous complaints from Koreans in the Philippines whom he had allegedly harassed and blackmailed to earn money.
He said Kim would usually use brag about his mafia connections to intimidate his victims who are forced to give him money out of fear for their lives.
