MANILA -- The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) have agreed to conduct all road reblocking and repair projects along EDSA during the Holy Week when many Metro Manila residents are expected to be out of town.

Instead of conducting the road projects every weekend, the MMDA and DPWH agreed to resume the repairs on April 15, Holy Tuesday, until April 20, Easter Sunday.

According to DPWH-National Capital Region director Reynaldo Tagudando, the reblocking along the northbound lane from Roxas Boulevard to Monumento will start on the evening of April 15, Holy Tuesday, and will end on April 18, Good Friday.

The repairs along the southbound lane from Monumento to Roxas Boulevard, meanwhile, will be conducted from April 18, Good Friday, until April 20, Easter Sunday.

Tagudando said about 39 percent of the 80,000 square meters of EDSA still need to be repaired.

MMDA Chairperson Francis Tolentino believes the "mega road reblocking" during the Holy Week will not have a major effect on traffic since students are on summer break and many residents are expected to be out of Metro Manila.

He said this will be the last stretch of the road reblocking and repair projects along EDSA.

Meanwhile, the MMDA and DPWH agreed to push through with the repairs of the Dario Bridge along EDSA on March 20, Thursday.

The repairs were initially scheduled to begin last Saturday, March 15, but the MMDA asked the DPWH to delay the start of the year-long project to give the DPWH additional time to prepare as well as inform the public about the construction.

The DPWH said their flagmen are scheduled to finish their traffic management training tomorrow.

Alternate route signs will also be put up to help motorists. -- Reports from Dennis Datu, dzMM; Jorge Cariño, ABS-CBN News
