MANILA, Philippines – Hundreds of military and police personnel joined a bikathon on Saturday morning to signify their call for credible May 10 elections.

About 700 members of the Philippine National Police, Philippine Army, Philippine Air Force and Philippine Marines biked from the Villamor Airbase to the Mall of Asia in Pasay City. They vowed to safeguard the people’s votes on the day of the election.

“This is to trumpet the advocacy of the Philippine Air Force for an honest and peaceful elections," said PAF spokesperson, Maj. Gerardo Zamudio.

After the bikathon, top officials of the police, military officials and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) signed a covenant for credible polls.

They hope to dispel reports of a possible military takeover in the event of a failure of elections.

“The chief-of-staff (Gen. Delfin Bangit) has answered that several times. He said the AFP will not take illegal orders,” he said. -- Report from ANC
