MANILA – A college in the University of the Philippines Manila on Thursday suspended its classes to mourn the death of Kristel Tejada, a Behavioral Sciences student who took her own life over tuition problems.
UP Manila Chancellor Manuel Aguto said classes at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) are suspended today in view of the necrological services for Tejada. The Department of Behavioral Sciences is under the CAS.
“Classes at the UP Manila CAS are suspended on Thursday, 21 March 2013, to allow for an orderly necrological mass and vigil for Kristel Tejada. (9 a.m. of March 21 to 9 a.m. of March 22). Thank you.” Aguto said.
Tejada’s parents relented to a public viewing at the school after being assured that UP Manila will take care of the security as well as the permit to transfer the remains from Sanctuary Funeral Chapel in Sta. Cruz Manila to the university grounds.
Faculty, staff and classmates are expected to attend the mass and tribute for Tejada.
UP Chancellor Manuel Agulto is expected to attend the tribute. A source said he has put off going to the funeral chapel to dodge members of the media. He supposedly wants his visit to be private.
Kristel’s father, Christopher Tejada, said UP officials are welcome to visit her wake. He said the family does not harbor bitterness against them. – with a report from Doris Bigornia, ABS-CBN News
