Smoke from LRT halts operation; 2 injured
MANILA, Philippines – A southbound train of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) was temporarily suspended Monday morning after smoke was seen coming from the train.
The train was headed to Baclaran when smoke emanated as it approached the United Nations Avenue LRT station. Some passengers reportedly panicked and one broke the train’s windows in an attempt to escape.
Lyn Paragas, Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) public relations head, told ABS-CBN News that the train experienced “technical failure.”
“Approaching UN Avenue, nagkaroon ng problema yung brake disc pad. Hindi pa naka-full stop yung tren, umusok. Nag-panic yung isang pasahero at binasag niya yung window. May mga pasahero na tinamaan ng bubog,” said Paragas.
Two passengers were injured after being hit by shards of broken glass. Both passengers are now being treated for minor injuries.
LRTA authorities are already investigating the incident.
