Two peanut butter products manufactured by the Samuya Food Manufacturing, Inc. reportedly tested positive for two kinds of salmonella.

The Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) and the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) discovered that Yummy and Ludy’s peanut butter have salmonella senftenberg and hvittinfoss.

Department of Health (DOH) recently conducted rectal swabbing on the company’s employees after some reportedly tested positive for salmonella. However, the DOH has yet to release the names and number of those affected by the bacteria.

The DOH expects the results to come out next week. In the meantime, the company will remain suspended until it abides by the guidelines set by BFAD in processing their products.

Last Friday, supermarket owners refused to sell the company’s products that were not included in the BFAD recall list.

Federico Ples, secretary-general of the Philippine Association of Supermarkets, Inc., said the group's members will start selling Samuya's "cleared" products only after the BFAD issues a new certification assuring all products being manufactured by the food company are safe.

Ples said they have advised all members to refrain from selling all Samuya-manufactured products due to "health concerns" for the consumers.

On March 23, the BFAD announced it is suspending the license to operate of Samuya's food plant in Hidalgo Village, Pasay City after discovering that it is not complying with the good manufacturing practices imposed by the government to ensure safety of all food products being distributed in markets.

Samuya products ordered recalled by the bureau were Mama Peanut Spread Sweet and Creamy, Ludy's Coco Jam Special, Ludy's Coco Jam with Langka, Mama Coco Jam, Ludy's Coco Jam Regular, Ludy's Coco Jam with Peanut, Ludy's Sweet and Creamy Peanut Butter, Sunny Cheers Peanut Butter and Yummy Sweet and Creamy Peanut Spread.
