MANILA – Sen. Bam Aquino on Monday said the government should focus on the modernization of the Bureau of Customs (BoC) to solve the problem of smuggling, particularly of substandard steel products.

According to Aquino, the BOC should computerize its system, which he said would make it hard for smuggled substandard steel products to enter the country.

Aquino also said the Department of Trade and Industry should have stricter monitoring of hardware stores which sell substandard steel products to prevent these from being used to build houses and buildings.

During a Senate hearing, the Philippine Iron Steel Institute (PISI) submitted legislative measures which aim to protect consumers against the proliferation of substandard steel materials.

The PISI is proposing the imposition of penalties and revocation of licenses of hardware stores found selling steel products which are of poor quality.

The group wants the BOC to monitor smuggling of these steel products, particularly from China. It is also seeking the destruction of seized substandard steel products to prevent these from being sold in the market. – From a report by Ruby Tayag, DZMM
