Fire leaves 3,000 families homeless in QC
MANILA, Philippines - An estimated 3,000 families were left homeless after a massive fire razed houses made of light materials at Barangay Damayang Lagi on E. Rodriguez Avenue, Quezon City Sunday afternoon.
The Bureau of Fire Protection said the fire started at around 3:50 p.m. and destroyed an estimated 1,500 houses in the area.
At least two people were injured in the blaze, according to a radio dzMM report.
Authorities temporarily re-routed traffic from Ayala Avenue corner E. Rodriguez Avenue to St. Luke's Medical Center to allow the entry of hundreds of firetrucks to the area. Firefighters said they were unable to enter the area immediately because of the narrow streets leading to the fire.
Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte said the nearby De Los Santos - STI College is being used as a temporary evacuation center for affected residents.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the blaze, which was put out at 8:45 p.m.
