MIAA: No flu-stricken passengers from US so far
The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said a total of 817 "healthy" people from the United States arrived in Manila on Tuesday morning.
Data from the MIAA said the 817 people were passengers of four Philippine Airlines flights that arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal II from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m.
The MIAA said all 817 passengers of the four flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas turned out negative from the airport's thermal scanners, which were activated after several parts of the United States were hit by the swine flu.
The MIAA said it remains on alert level 2. It said that as of Tuesday morning, it has not detected fever or flu from any of the arriving passengers.
The Bureau of Quarantine on Monday said it has started implementing health surveillance measures, including thermal scanning of all arriving passengers from Mexico, United States and other countries with reported cases of the flu virus.
Edgardo Sabitsana, director of the Bureau of Quarantine, said they have not recorded or isolated a single case of the human swine flu virus among incoming passengers or even a single case of a traveller with fever.
A health alert notice on flu-like illness is now being distributed to all arriving travellers, especially those from US and Mexico.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque has assured the public that the country has sufficient supply of anti-viral drugs for the treatment of persons infected with the new virus.
Dr. Frederico Castillo, head of the NAIA quarantine team, said that if they find any passenger confirmed to have a fever through their thermal scanning machine, they would immediately isolate the person and give him or her a surgical mask to prevent the virus from spreading and bring him or her to the hospital.
