Police warns vs 'threat groups' on Labor Day
MANILA, Philippines - Police in major parts of the country have been placed on full alert ahead of the commemoration of Labor Day on Tuesday.
The alert level was raised in anticipation of protest actions by militant and cause-oriented groups to air their grievances and demands, according to Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Nicanor Bartolome.
The PNP warned that "in connection with the Labor Day Celebration on May 1, 2012, ...various threat groups might take advantage of the conduct of simultaneous rallies and demonstrations by some militant and cause-oriented groups to air their grievances and demands."
The areas where police are now on high alert are Metro Manila, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Regions 3, 4A, 4B, 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13.
The police Special Action Force is also on full alert, Bartolome said in a directive.
Meanwhile, other offices and units are on heightened alert.
"All unit commanders are strictly reminded to secure all PNP camps and offices, vital installations, economic key points and places of convergence of people and are given the discretion to upgrade their alert level based on the prevailing peace and order situation in their respective AORs (areas of responsibility," the PNP chief said. - report from Doland Castro, ABS-CBN News
