MANILA, Philippines – An African who has been living in Singalong, Manila for 3 years is being accused of recruiting Filipinos to become drug mules.

Suspect James Francis William, who hails from Ivory Coast, is allegedly a member of a West African drug syndicate.

“Liligawan sila tapos eventually isasama sa ibang bansa. Until in such time, papadalhan na sila ng illegal drugs,” said Jeoffrey Tacio, director of the special enforcement service of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

On Wednesday, William was allegedly going to send a Filipina to Africa to get drugs, which would be brought to China.

PDEA seized from William 30 grams of shabu and passports of several suspected Filipina drug mules.

William denied the allegations.

“In the Philippines, I'm doing catering services. I only bought ticket for the lady, I never recruited her for anything,” said William.

Last year, four Filipinos were executed for drug trafficking in China where 73 other Filipinos are on death row.

Despite this, PDEA said some are still lured into becoming drug syndicate members through social networking sites.

“Huwag na huwag sila malilinlang, kasi magaling mangbola ang mga ito eh,” said Tacio.

Meanwhile, PDEA is against the bid of a group of former addicts and alcoholics to become a party-list group.

The agency fears that the group may create laws that would weaken the campaign against drugs if it is accredited in Congress. -- Report from Jay Ruiz, ABS-CBN News
