MANILA, Philippines - After almost two decades, former Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chair Bayani Fernando and wife Marides are about to lose their control over Marikina City.

The couple's allies and party-mates are trailing in the mayoral and congressional races.

The Fernandos' candidate for the mayoralty race, incumbent Vice Mayor Marion Andres, is losing to incumbent Rep. Del De Guzman, a former ally of the couple

With 99% of the votes counted, de Guzman was enjoying a lead of 60,000 over Andres. As of posting time, the canvassing of votes had yet to be finished.

"Some PCOS machines malfunctioned so the canvassers have to do manual counting," de Guzman told abs-cbnNews.com/Newsbreak in a telephone interview.

The Fernandos have been in power in Marikina City since1992 when then Mayor Rodolfo Valentino lost his re-election bid to Bayani.

Bayani went on to serve as mayor for nine years. In 2001, he fielded his wife, Marides, to replace him. Marides was re-elected in 2004 and in 2007.

The couple is expected to lose their political clout in the city since Marides chose not to run for any position.

Bayani, running mate of presidential candidate Richard Gordon, is expected to finish fourth in the 8-way vice-presidential race.

In the vice mayoralty race, another Fernando ally is losing. Liberal Party's (LP) Samuel Ferriol is enjoying a 40,000 lead over Thaddeus Santos Jr. of the Bagumbayan party.

Meanwhile, Fernando's candidate for the congressional race in the 2nd district, councilor Donn Carlo Favis, is also trailing LP's Romero Quimbo, who had a 30,000 lead as of posting time. (abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak)
