MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) Five people were killed in a series of shooting incidents early Sunday morning in Fairview, Quezon City.

Police said the first victim was a certain Rodelio dela Cruz, who was shot by a motorcycle-riding suspect in front of a store selling car accessories and beside an apartelle in Commonwealth Avenue in North Fairview.

A few minutes later, a woman identified as Alodia Grace Go was shot in the corner of Regalado Avenue and Bronx Street.

Two more victims – Jelmer Gabronino and Angelee Augit Soliva – were shot in a nearby mirror shop.

According to Soliva and Gabronino’s relatives, the two were tasked to buy medicine but did not return to their homes, leading their kin to search for them.

Slugs of a .9-mm caliber gun were recovered from the four victims.

In another incident, a suspect shot dead a still-unidentified garbage collector in the southbound lane of Commonwalth, near Pearl Drive.

A caliber .45-mm firearm was used in the shooting.

Investigators are still trying to establish the motive behind what appeared to be random shootings, said Inspector Roldante Sarmiento, deputy chief of the neighborhood in Quezon City, where the killings took place.

"There were five people in four different locations. They had no connection. They were just bystanders. We have no idea why they were shot," he told AFP.

"It looks like a shooting spree," he said.

In the past, many hired gunmen have killed their victims while on motorbikes, escaping swiftly while using their helmets to hide their identities.

However witnesses told police that the killers in this incident did not appear to be looking for any particular target, Sarmiento added. -- Report from Dexter Ganibe, DZMM, and Agence France-Presse
