MANILA, Philippines – A 70-year-old woman lost her entire life savings to two scam artists in Makati.

Victoria, who just returned from the United States after 25 years, said she was inside a mall in Makati when a woman named “Mary” invited her for lunch. “Mary” told Victoria that she was a nurse from Canada.

Upon exiting the mall, Victoria and “Mary” were then approached by another woman named “Jean.” Posing as a millionaire, “Jean” asked help in looking for a generator set that she would like to purchase.

“Jean” somehow was able to convince Victoria to show her jewelry collection, with the promise of a P5,000-reward for every piece of jewelry that Victoria presented.

“Sabi ko, ‘Why not?’ Titignan lang naman,” said Victoria.

Victoria went to her condominium unit and placed all her jewelries worth P2 million, P300,000 in cash, a BlackBerry phone, digital camera and laptop computer in a bag.

“Naging maamo ako sa kanila, lahat ginagawa ko,” Victoria said.

Victoria gave the bag to “Jean,” who was waiting inside a van.

The bag was given back to her when the three parted ways. However, when Victoria checked the contents, only the laptop was left, and the reward money that “Jean” promised was only pieces of paper.

Victoria said she felt no anger towards the scam artists. Instead, she is thankful that she was not hurt or even killed.

“Kailangan may limit ang pakikipagkaibigan. Huwag magtitiwala masyado sa mabait,” said Victoria. -- Report from Dominic Almelor, ABS-CBN News
