US submarine fans PH-China dispute: activists
MANILA, Philippines - Almost a hundred activists from various militant groups burned an American flag while holding a protest action near the US Embassy in Manila City.
The group said they were disturbed over the news that the USS North Carolina, a high-tech stealth submarine, is docked in Subic.
Protesters said the presence of the submarine in Zambales was not a coincidence, and that its presence serves to fan the animosity with the already ruffled international relations between Philippines and China.
The sudden appearance of the sub, the group said, is an indication of future conduct of US military troops in the country.
Party-list group Gabriela group also warned of a possible another Subic rape, referring to the case of "Nicole" who was raped in Subic by Lance Corporal Daniel Smith in 2005 based on court decisions.
They said Filipinas are always at the losing end whenever they complain of violence against foreigners, especially military troops and diplomats.
The Manila police were able to hold their line along TM Kalaw Ave in Manila that prevented the protest group from getting near anywhere the American embassy.
But before they self dispersed, they burned an American flag as a symbolism of their disgust over what they alleged as American imperialism over Philippine sovereignity.
