Rosal not allowed to attend baby's burial

MANILA - The Pasig Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 266 has allowed alleged communist leader Andrea Rosal to attend the wake of her daughter whom she lost just a day after birth, but only for three hours.

In his ruling, Pasig RTC Branch 266 Judge Toribio Ilao Jr. said Rosal will be allowed to attend her baby's wake at the Iglesia Filipina Independiente National Cathedral in Taft Avenue, Manila from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, "in the interest of compassionate justice."

"Wherefore in the interest of compassionate justice, the accused is allowed to attend the wake of her baby daughter...provided that she is escorted with sufficient number of jail guards who shall immediately return her to her detention cell," Ilao's order read.

The court, however, did not allow Rosal to go to the burial of her daughter on Thursday, May 22, in Ibaan, Batangas "due to security reasons apart from her medical condition."

Rosal's lawyers said they were disappointed that their motion was only partially granted.

They had appealed to the court to give Rosal three days, from May 20 to 22, to attend her baby's wake and burial.

During Tuesday's hearing, the prosecution did not object to Rosal's motion to attend the wake of her daughter, but requested that she be allowed to attend the wake for only two hours.

They objected to Rosal attending the burial in Ibaan as they deem it as a "high-risk" area.

Rosal, who is accused for kidnapping with murder, was arrested last March 27. She was later allowed to be confined at the PGH, where she gave birth on the morning of May 17.

Rosal is the daughter of the late New People's Army (NPA) spokesperson Gregorio ''Ka Roger'' Rosal.
