MANILA - As passengers continue to complain of the extreme heat at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Duty Free Philippines (DFP) has put in place a gimmick to help ease their woes.

In support of the Department of Tourism’s campaign to give passengers a warm welcome, the state-owned firm has started giving out ice-cold drinks and hand-held fans to arriving tourists, balikbayans and OFWs.

"This effort is anchored on the strategically located airport arrival outlets of DFP. Similarly, DFP's airport departure outlets are exerting parallel efforts for the benefit and convenience of departing passengers," Duty Free Chief Operating Officer Lorenzo Formoso said.

Recent reports show that several passengers have already fainted due to the unbearable heat, specifically at the Terminal 1.

The air-conditioning woes are due to the ongoing P1.64 billion renovation project at the terminal. The Department of Transport and Communications said chillers have already been ordered, but these will only arrive later this year.

Duty Free, an attached agency of the DOT, is mandated to satisfy the duty free shopping needs of international travelers. The agency is considered a vital component as it contributes to the efforts in the development of the country’s tourism infrastructure, programs and projects.

“Duty Free shops are among the first places that our balikbayans visit, and usually they come back with their families and loved ones. We want to make sure we are giving them a very warm welcome and make their bonding moments with their families truly worthwhile and memorable,” Formoso said.

Duty Free Philippines marks its 27th anniversary this May and is ramping up its promotional activities this summer season in time for the month-long celebration.

“This May, which is our 27th anniversary month, Fiesta Mall will be loaded with more exciting promos, including huge discounts on toys, electronics and household appliances,” Formoso noted.

Formoso said aside from the toys, appliances and electronics sale, the Fiesta Mall department store in Paranaque has extended its ongoing promo of 10% discount on liquor pack of three.

The Fiesta Mall, Formoso added, is also opening new boutiques to give returning and visiting overseas Filipino professionals and their families wider choices when shopping.
