MANILA, Philippines – Urban poor group Kadamay condemned the murder of an anti-demolition leader in Malabon on Wednesday.

In a statement, Kadamay said Ernesto “Ka Erning” Gulfo, 52, may have been killed for leading actions against the impending demolition of the houses of some 1,500 families in Barangay Catmon.

Gulfo, president of the Malabon chapter of Alyansa Kontra Demolisyon, was shot dead inside his junk shop by at least two assailants on Wednesday morning.

Kadamay said an eviction notice was sent to the residents last May 7.

The residents, led by Gulfo, held a barricade on May 21, the scheduled date of demolition. The demolition did not push through.

The group called on the Aquino administration to finally put a halt to the series of demolitions targeting informal settlements in Metro Manila.

Last April 23, Arnel Leonor died during a violent demolition at the Silverio Compound in Parañaque City.
