Cosmetic docs, nurses held for 'lipo death'
Police said they are holding three doctors and two nurses allegedly involved in the death of a woman who had liposuction at a cosmetic surgery clinic in Libis, Quezon City on Monday, radio dzMM reported.
Senior Superintendent Rudy Mabanag of the Quezon City Police District identified the five as Doctors Lorenzo Peregrina (cosmetic-plastic surgeon), Mylene Tan (anesthesiologist) and Joel Punzon (surgeon) and nurses Fiona Francisco and Joanna Melissa Tabiando.
Mabanag said the five are employees of the Borough Medical Care Institute located at Cyber One Building in Eastwood Cyberpark along E. Rodriguez Jr. Avenue.
They were taken into custody following the death of Mary Jane Arciaga, an overseas contract worker.
Arciaga was admitted as a patient Monday afternoon for the procedure.
Mabanag said that based on the investigation report, the procedure started around 1:30 p.m. The patient died four hours later.
The official said that according to experts, those who will have liposuction should undergo medical observation for at least one day before the surgery.
Mabanag said that Arciaga had a successful "tummy-tuck" procedure at the same clinic last year.
Police are awaiting the results of the autopsy on Arciaga's body. Mabanag said that results are due by the end of the week.
The clinic's management, meanwhile, has yet to issue a statement as of posting time. With a report from Edwin Sevidal, radio dzMM
