UST quarantines bldg, St. Paul's-Makati suspends classes

More schools in Metro Manila suspended classes and imposed quarantine conditions in their campuses Monday due to fears of the possible spread of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus.

The University of Santo Tomas in España, Manila suspended classes of medicine, nursing and rehab students after a student from the College of Medicine and Surgery tested positive for A (H1N1).

In a statement, UST Secretary-General Rev. Isidro Abano said the school has cordoned off the Saint Martin de Porres building, which houses the Colleges of Medicine and Surgery, Nursing, and Rehabilitation and Sciences, until June 29. The school said satellite offices of the three colleges will be opened in an adjacent building.

Abano said UST has started an information drive about Influenza A (H1N1) inside the campus.

St. Paul's College in Makati City suspended classes for 10 days starting Monday after many of its students exhibited flu-like symptoms, a radio dzMM report said.

Makati City Health Officer Maria Lourdes Salud welcomed the announcement following reports that Makati City has six confirmed cases of A (H1N1). She clarified, however, that there is no confirmed case of A (H1N1) in St. Paul's Makati.

Adamson University in San Marcelino, Manila on Sunday declared suspension of classes for five days due to a confirmed case of influenza A (H1N1). Classes will resume on Thursday, June 25.

In Cainta, Mayor Ramon Ilagan and the local Department of Education (DepEd) office suspended classes at the Karangalan Elementary school for ten days starting Monday, after two students out of 43 suspected cases tested positive of the virus.

The Department of Health on Sunday reported that 64 more cases of influenza A (H1N1) have fully recovered, making the total of fully recovered cases to 399, while reporting 36 additional cases.

In a statement, Health Secretary Francisco Duque said 79 percent of all confirmed cases since May 21 have recovered from the illness so far.

The new cases, meanwhile, brings the total number of confirmed cases to 428.

Duque said all the confirmed cases are "mild in nature."

As of June 19 the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a total of 44,287 cases of the illness, with 180 deaths, from 90 reporting countries.
