No problem with no ‘wang-wangs’, says Aquino nephew
MANILA, Philippines - The family of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III’s family has always recoiled from using sirens to clear their way to an important event.
In an interview with ANC, Aquino’s nephew Jiggy Cruz said that even before his grandmother (Cory Aquino) was President, "we really did not like having escorts. We just wanted to go out to the road privately. We’re pretty much happy that Tito Noy doesn’t want that.”
Cruz is the eldest son of President Corazon Aquino’s daughter, Maria Elena “Ballsy” Aquino-Cruz.
Aquino’s inauguration speech Wednesday created an emotional response from the public, who agreed with him that sirens, or “wang-wangs,” are the bane of traffic.
Cruz said this part of his uncle’s speech was one of his favorites.
He also said he liked the part where Aquino said “kayo ang boss ko.”
“My lola always told the grandchildren, that to be president you serve the country. The country is your boss,” he said.
He said that the family knows that the President will meet criticisms along the way.
“The first 100 days could be crucial. [But] in his campaign, he said he can’t do it alone…everyone should pitch in,” he added.
Aquino address
Cruz also revealed that his uncle is “leaning towards [residing in] Bahay Pangarap.”
He said Aquino has yet to decide, but there is already reluctance to live in the Arlegui Mansion.
He said there was also reluctance on the part of his grandmother to reside there “because it was run by a dictator before.”
He said: “My tito, being a simple man, I think Malacanang is too big for him. He just wants a modest house.”
