MANILA, Philippines – Flood control teams made up of about 240 personnel were deployed in Metro Manila on Tuesday after several areas were submerged in floods, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.

MMDA Chairman Atty. Francis Tolentino the 240 personnel will be spending the night in their respective designated areas.

The personnel were assigned to composite teams to address traffic, rescue and flood control.

Free rides

Tolentino said local government units in Parañaque, Pasig and Mandaluyong have offered free rides to assist commuters who are stranded because of the floods.

In Quezon City, government agencies are discussing measures to evacuate residents living within the vicinity of the La Mesa Dam.

Tolentino added that the Department of Public Works and Highways has already repaired a flood censor in the Quezon Blvd. underpass which malfunctioned.

Tolentino also clarified that only MMDA personnel in its finance, legal and accounting divisions have been sent home.

Emergency response units remain on alert as more rains are expected until Wednesday. -- Report from RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
