Pregnant woman cuts open belly
MANILA, Philippines – An 8 to 9-month pregnant woman in Sta. Mesa, Manila conducted a caesarian operation on herself without anesthesia and stitched herself afterwards, a local broadsheet reported on Thursday.
PO1 Michael Pavon of the Manila Police District station in Sta. Mesa was quoted by the Philippine Daily Inquirer as saying that the woman was found by her aunt last Wednesday lying in her blood-stained bed inside their house on Nagtahan Street with a dead fetus and a kitchen knife.
The lower belly of the woman, a 28-year-old Isabela native, had a cut of at least five inches, and was sewn with an ordinary needle and thread.
The woman was rushed to Ospital ng Maynila and was later transferred to another hospital to have her belly stitched properly.
“They could not even believe it happened,” Pacon told the Inquirer.
“I could not even believe she did that. Her aunt said that she could not find a reason why she would do that.”
The police could not get a statement from the woman “who seemed to be in a state of shock over what she had done to herself.”
The Inquirer said the aunt told investigators that the woman’s husband left for abroad last year. The woman never said she was pregnant and claimed she was only gaining weight.
“What the aunt remembers is her niece’s last medical checkup in January which was never followed through,” the case investigator said.
The woman reportedly had an experience in helping out at a health center in her province during surgical operations.
She remains confined at the Sta. Ana District Hospital and is facing abortion charges, Pavon said.
