MANILA, Philippines - Actress-turned-lawmaker Lani Mercado-Revilla is seeking a new debate on the opening of classes, saying students and the rest of the educational system would be better off if school starts in September.

In a press release, the representative from the second district of Cavite filed House Bill 4895, which aims to revise the school calendar, which presently starts in June.

She said about 19 to 20 typhoons visit the country starting in June, resulting in the suspension and irregularity of school days.

“As much as 25 to 30 days are subtracted from the school calendar, as recorded in the previous years and could have been prevented if classes start on the later part of the year,” she said.

“It will also minimize the danger to the students, teachers and their parents and relatives who bring and fetch the students and teachers to school especially when classes are abruptly suspended or cancelled because of the rains and floods that threaten the safety of these individuals,” she added.

She noted the Philippines and Brunei are the only countries in the Asia-Pacific region that start classes in June.
