Afternoon classes suspended in MM, other provinces

MANILA, Philippines (5th UPDATE) – Afternoon classes in the entire National Capital Region (NCR) and parts of Luzon have been suspended due to tropical depression “Juaning,” the Department of Education (DepEd) said Tuesday.

Dr. Elena Ruiz of the DepEd-NCR said classes at all levels (pre-school, elementary and high school) in the NCR were suspended. Ruiz asked schools to dismiss morning classes before 12 noon.

Classes in preschool (public and private) are automatically suspended in provinces under Public Storm Warning Signal No. 1. These include Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Abra, Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mt. Province, and Benguet, Nueva Ecija, Quezon and Aurora.

Other areas where classes were suspended at the pre-school, elementary and high school levels are Bacoor, Imus, Noveleta, Rosario, Kawit, Tanza, General Trias in Cavite; Laguna: San Pablo City, Lipa City, Batangas.

Classes on all levels in Camarines Norte were also suspended.

Ateneo de Manila University suspended all afternoon classes in kindergarten, elementary and high school while the University of the East Philippines suspended all classes from 12 noon onwards for their Manila and Caloocan campuses.

The University of Santo Tomas announced suspension of classes at all levels (elementary to college) effective 12 noon, according to Prof. Giovanna Fontanilla of the Office of Public Affairs. Far Eastern University also announced a similar suspension of classes by noon.

The University of the Philippines Integrated System (UPIS) suspended its elementary and high school classes starting 12 noon.

Meanwhile, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) suspended its classes in all of its campuses by 1 p.m.
