Cops recover ex-DFA chief's car, Ramsay's Volvo
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - Police recovered the stolen vehicles of former Foreign Affairs secretary Roberto Romulo and the father of actor Derek Ramsay after the arrest of 2 suspected carjackers in Quezon City on Thursday night.
Superintendent Maristelo Manalo of the National Capital Region Police Office's (NCRPO) anti-carnapping division said they spotted Romulo's stolen Toyota Camry in EDSA-Santolan area in Quezon City on Thursday night.
Manalo said the occupants of the Toyota Camry fired at them when they flagged it down at the gates of Filinvest 2 subdivision in Barangay Batasan Hills.
After a brief firefight, police arrested the 2 suspects identified as Dale Alemagno and Glen del Castillo.
Manalo said that the 2 suspects were with their leader, Ivan Padilla, during the encounter.
He said Padilla, who was on board another Toyota Camry when the shootout happened, was able to escape.
Manalo said that the suspects changed Romulo's registered license plate with a police commemorative plate, which, he said, is one of the car thieves' way of evading detection.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News, one of the suspects said that they were supposed to deliver the Toyota Camry to a buyer at the Filinvest 2 subdivision.
In a press conference on Friday morning, NCRPO chief Director Roberto Rosales announced that through information from the 2 suspects, they were able to recover the black Volvo XC 90 owned by the father of hunk actor Derek Ramsay.
Rosales said the vehicle was recovered from Parañaque.
He said follow-up operations were underway for the recovery of other vehicles stolen by the group and the arrest of Padilla and other remaining gang members.
The NCRPO chief said the operatives recovered a shotgun, a 9mm pistol and shabu paraphernalia from Romulo's Toyota Camry. A rocket-propelled grenade and more drug paraphernalia were also recovered from the Volvo.
Police believe that the same group was responsible in the carjacking of a Japanese national's gray Toyota Innova, which was forcibly taken last Monday at The Fort in Taguig City. -- reports from Doland Castro and Gretchen Malalad, ABS-CBN News
