PNoy asks Baseco settlers to relocate
MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino on Friday appealed to thousands of illegal settlers in Baseco compound to move to safer ground rather than risk their lives by living in a danger zone.
Aquino said there is a temporary relocation site in Sitio Aromo that can provide immediate safe shelter as the Metro continues to experience bad weather.
But the President is also encouraging permanent relocation to Montalban, Rizal.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said there are schools nearby and residents will be given skills training and possibly a loan.
Deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the recent stormy weather has made it imperative for illegal settlers to leave danger zones in Metro Manila.
"We do appeal to the residents along these areas identified as danger areas to heed the appeal of the DSWD para maiwasan na ho 'yung ganitong pinsala sa kanila. Kasi hindi lang ho 'yung storm surge 'yung nakagawa ng pinsala, may tumama pa po doon dahil delikado nga talaga sa kanila 'yung doon sa tabi sila ng dagat. They are greatly affected by this," she said.
She added: "So lahat ho sila ngayon nandoon sa evacuation centers. Sana po makipag-cooperate po tayo para mailayo po tayo doon sa mga sakunang nangyari dahil doon sa mga dating kinatatayuan ng kanilang bahay."
