(UPDATE) LTFRB grounds Jell Transit buses
The Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on Tuesday suspended a bus company's operation after one of its units killed a 3-year-old girl along EDSA in Quezon City, Monday afternoon.
The LTRFRB said the Jell Transit bus company's operations have been suspended for 30 days. It said the company's 23 buses plying the Alabang to SM Fairview route are affected by the suspension.
Transportation Undersecretary Thompson Lantion earlier said LTFRB Chairman Alberto Suansing was to look into the possibility of ordering a franchise suspension against the bus company after figuring in another deadly road accident.
"Inatasan si Bert Suansing na i-summon ang operator ng Jell Transit para magpaliwanag, pati ang suspension ng bus na iyan," Lantion told ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda.
He said the company's three units have been involved in at least 3 major accidents in Metro Manila, including the incident that killed the 3-year-old girl.
The girl and her mother were crossing a pedestrian lane under the Santolan flyover near Camp Crame, Quezon City, when a speeding Jell Transit bus hit them.
The girl died instantly while her mother's left arm had to be amputated at the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital. The mother was identified as Christine Jumabon, reportedly a civilian employee of the PNP.
The bus driver identified as Mario Villamar has been taken into police custody.
