Female inmates donate to flood victims
MANILA, Philippines – Help continues to pour in for the victims of habagat (southwest monsoon) that left more than 60 people dead and submerged a large portion of Metro Manila and nearby provinces of Luzon.
Inmates at the Bureau of Corrections in Mandaluyong City gave up their lunch so that people at an evacuation center could eat.
The inmates prepared 2,500 hot meals as their own contribution to those who have been affected by the monsoon rains.
“Kung tutuusin, maswerte na kami dahil kami may pagkain, may matutulugan,” said inmate Rowena Bejasa.
The meals were distributed at an evacuation center in Marikina City.
“’Yung nagawa nilang krimen, isang yugto lang ‘yun ng buhay nila. Pero ‘yung pagdamay sa kapwa, hindi nawawala,” said Atty. Rachel Ruelo, Superintendent of the Bureau of Corrections.
This is not the first time that inmates extended a helping hand to flood victims. Early this week, inmates at the Bilibid prison gave up their meals to send aid to the victims. -- Report from Pia Gutierrez, ABS-CBN News
