MANILA (UPDATED) - The University of Santo Tomas (UST), Adamson University (AdU), and San Sebastian College suspended classes on Tuesday afternoon as heavy rains pounded Metro Manila and triggered floods in various areas.

On its Twitter account, The Varsitarian, the official student publication of UST, said classes in all levels were suspended starting 4 p.m.

The AdU and San Sebastian College also later announced suspension of classes effective 5 p.m. due to the inclement weather.

In an advisory issued at 3:40 p.m., state weather bureau PAGASA said a thunderstorm was affecting Metro Manila, Rizal (Rodriguez, San Mateo, Antipolo, Cupang, Cainta), Quezon (Gen Nakar, Lucban, Tayabas, Candelaria), Zambales (Sta. Cruz, San Marcelino), and portions of Tarlac, Bulacan, and Cavite.

The thunderstorm may persist within two hours, PAGASA said.

The heavy downpour has triggered floods in some parts of Metro Manila.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said floods at Quezon Avenue Biak na Bato reached knee-deep at 4:15 p.m.

Gutter-deep floods also hit Araneta Avenue, and the northbound and southbound lanes of Aurora tunnel.
