Police on alert for anti-pork rally
MANILA – Police are on alert for the scheduled anti-pork barrel protest at the Rizal Park on Monday, August 26.
National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Chief Supt. Marcelo Garbo Jr. said at least 500 personnel from the Manila Police District will be deployed to the event.
Garbo said augmentation teams from regional precincts and other districts will also be deployed.
Garbo said the NCRPO is always ready for events such as Monday’s protests, but he noted that because the rally started as an online petition, there is some uncertainty on the number of participants.
“We don’t know how many rallyists will be there on Monday but we are continuously assessing the situation,” Garbo told ANC on Saturday.
According to some of the participants, around a million people have already expressed intention in joining the rally.
Garbo admitted that one of the challenges in securing Monday’s protest is that there is no one particular group identified with organizing the entire event.
He said he has already directed district directors to contact some of the participants and coordinate with several groups who will be joining.
Simultaneous protests are also scheduled in Naga, Cebu, and Baguio.
