Recaptured Bilibid inmate not mentally ill
MANILA, Philippines - Recaptured New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) inmate Rommel Laciste is not suffering from a mental disorder, Justice Secretary Leila De Lima said Monday.
De Lima, who saw Laciste over the weekend, has ordered the murder convict removed from the facility's psychiatric ward after interviewing him about his escape from the national penitentiary last August 15.
After he was recaptured last week, Laciste said he escaped alone by boarding a delivery truck loaded with rice hull.
He later changed his story, saying he was on board the truck with fellow murder convict Rolito Go and several Chinese nationals.
He said he got down in Baclaran, Manila and walked all the way to Sampaloc before boarding a bus going to Isabela.
Laciste claimed he escaped because he was threatened by a fellow inmate after he failed to pay his P24,000 debt.
"He admitted that he only concocted the story to pin the blame [on] someone else," De Lima said.
Laciste will be facing additional charges of evasion in the service of sentence.
