First PH night quake drill at Robinsons mall
MANILA, Philippines - Some 600 members of the North Sector Division of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) today conducted an earthquake simulation drill at the compound of Veterans Memorial Medical Center in North Avenue, Quezon City.
The drill included quick response formation of various emergency teams including the command post, relief center, trauma unit, first aid teams, and rescue tents at the parking lot of VMMC.
Members of the rescue unit showed the drill on treating victims of collapsed buildings and infrastructures and others who may need immediate medical attention.
The drill included loading and unloading of victims in several ambulances and transportation to nearest hospitals.
The VMMC was tapped to become one of the staging areas in Metro Manila for search, rescue and evacuation venue on the north side of the metropolis whenever a destructive earthquake hits Metro Manila.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said this is a wake up call after the Samar Earthquake and the most recent earthquake in Costa Rica.
"Panahon na na itaas natin ang kamalayan ng mamamayan sa peligro ng lindol," he said.
The relief operation center was set up together with a kitchen to provide meals for all those who will be involved in the massive earthquake operations.
Aside from VMMC, there will be another earthquake drill today at the 4th floor of Robinsons Galleria Mall at around eight in the evening.
Tolentino said the exercise "will be the first night time earthquake drill in the Philippines."
Tolentino is urging private companies and organizations to also conduct night time earthquake drill.
On Sunday, the MMDA will conduct another earthquake simulation drill at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City, ULTRA compound in Pasig City and Intramuros Compound in Manila City.
