MANILA, Philippines – It has been over 30 hours since the fire at the Tutuban Mall in Divisioria, Manila started, and while the fire has died down a little, firefighters fear it may flare up again.

The structure is still enveloped in thick smoke.

Bureau of Fire Protection-National Capital Region Chief Santiago Laguna said they fear that the fire inside the building will last for three days before it is extinguished. This is because there are many combustible objects such as clothing in the mall, which will keep the fire raging.

Firemen are also having difficulty entering the building due to the thickness of smoke inside.

According to Laguna, they lack sufficient breathing apparatus, and so cannot easily breach the smoke to reach the seat of fire, or the place where the fire could have started.

According to reports, the fire started at around 12:41 a.m. yesterday. Nearby establishments have been closed since yesterday as a safety precaution. Stall owners have also stopped trying to enter the building to save their wares, because of the heat and smoke. – with a report from DZMM
