MANILA, Philippines - An out-of-control passenger bus rammed an electric post along Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City on Tuesday night, leaving 26 people injured.

A passenger told an ABS-CBN News team that the driver of the bus was trying to avoid something while speeding along the avenue at the Tandang Sora area, when he lost control of the vehicle.

"Sa bilis ng takbo, may iniwasan siya doon kaya inilihis niya na lang 'yong bus," one of the passenger said.

Traffic police said that the bus's breaks could have malfunctioned and the driver was forced to ram the bus to a concrete electric post. The accident happened around 11 p.m..

Bus driver Teodorico Cornejo was severely injured as he was pinned to his seat after the collision. It took rescuers from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) more than 30 minutes to pluck out the driver.

Members of the MMDA's rescue team said the 25 passengers were brought to a nearest hospital.

Police will file reckless imprudence resulting in multiple injuries against the bus driver.

At least 10 accidents involving passenger buses have been reported since January.

The deadliest so far is the accident in Benguet province where 41 people died.

Bus accidents so far this year:

January 4 - 24 people were hurt when a bus from Manila travelling to Bohol fell into a ravine in Del Gallego town in Camarines Sur.

February 14 - 2 Navy men were killed in a road mishap caused by a passenger bus along the North Luzon Expressway.

March 6 - 12 people were killed in a tourist bus accident and some 20 were injured when a bus rammed into a tree in Pugo, La Union.

June 13 – 21 Iranian medical students on their way to a picnic were killed while 30 were injured when a bus fell off a cliff in Barangay Cansumuruy in Balamban, Cebu.

July 3 - 15 were killed and 57 were injured when an overloaded passenger bus crashed into a house in Lutopan, Toledo City.

August 18 - 41 out of 49 passengers died and 9, including the bus conductor, were injured when it plunged into a deep ravine in Benguet.

August 20 - 7 of 30 vocational college students were slightly injured and one was seriously hurt when a bus crashed in Dalaguete, Cebu.

August 21- Binibining International 2009 Melody Gersbach along with her make-up artist Alden Orense and driver Santos Ramos Jr. died after a CG Guevarra bus rammed their car past 11 am. In Bula, Camarines Sur.

August 29 - 5 people died and 47 injured when a bus fell off a cliff in Pagbilao, Quezon due to an engine problem.

Sept 7 - A policeman died after a bus passenger bus collided with the police mobile car he was driving in Lubao, Pampanga – with a report from Doland Castro, ABS-CBN News
