MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Red Cross showed off its amphibian trucks, the vehicles used to help save lives and deliver relief aid to flood victims of last month's “habagat” rains.

According to the state weather bureau, 10 to 11 typhoons are expected to hit the country before the year ends.

This is why the Red Cross is preparing for the inevitable.

“Kasama namin ‘yung mga rubber boats at mga aluminum boats. Pwede mo pagkasyahin dito mga 60 na tao. So madadala na sila agad sa mga evacuation center,” said Philippine Red Cross chairman Richard Gordon.

The amphibian vehicles can also be used in case a tsunami hits the country.

But Gordon stresses that the public should still know how to respond during calamities.

“Tulad ng earthquake, ‘yan ay nasa pamilya. ‘Are you prepared in your family to evacuate?’” he said.

Red Cross plans to acquire additional amphibians and deploy them to other disaster prone areas. -- Report from Jasmin Romero, ABS-CBN News; ANC
