Father who whipped kids with bolo could go free
MANILA - A father who beat up his three children using a belt and a bolo after they failed to cook dinner could go free if no case is filed against him, police said Monday.
Taguig police said Manuel Cuntapay, who is now in prison, will have to be freed by tomorrow if the children or their relatives refuse to file a case against him.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development also said their hands are tied because the kids refuse to issue a statement against their father.
A TV Patrol report earlier showed the 3 Cuntapay children aged 12, 11 and 8 with wounds on their heads and arms after being beaten severely by their father.
The report said Cuntapay was drunk and had whipped the children, first with a belt and then with a bolo, after they failed to cook dinner last Saturday.
"They know how to cook but there was no food," Cuntapay said.
Women's desk office Filomena Sabelo of the local social welfare and development office in Old Lower Bicutan said Cuntapay hit his kids with a bolo after getting tired of using his belt.
The mother of the Cuntapay children is expected to arrive from Malaysia tonight. The kids' grandfather said it will be up to the children's mother if a case will be filed against Cuntapay.
Despite the abuse, none of the children want their father to stay in jail. They said they will ask help from the police if their father abuses them again.
Cuntapay has also apologized to his children, saying he loved them and did not mean to hurt them.
"Nagsisisi po ako. Di ko na po uulitin. Mahal ko po mga anak ko. Hinahatid ko po sa school lagi mga iyan," he said.
