MANILA -  A member of the Philippine Marines was arrested for spying on the house of National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera in Quezon City Thursday morning.

Lumbera said security guards arrested Guerrero Hannival Mosura Mondido, 27, for taking pictures of Lumbera's home in Mapayapa 1 subdivision in Barangay Holy Spirit. Two of Guerrero's companions boarded a car and fled before they could be arrested.

Lumbera said the surveillance could be connected to his decision to protest Malacañang's intervention in the National Artists awards.

Bayan secretary-general Renato Reyes said the Philippine National Police should move quickly to investigate the reported surveillance of Lumbera's house.

"We are outraged over this incident. Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro and the Armed Forces of the Philippines should explain why its intel operatives were there. Was the AFP planning to harm Bien in any way? Prof. Lumbera is a leader of the Concerned Artists of the Phil and a National Council member of BAYAN," Reyes said in a text message.
