MANILA, Philippines – Reynaldo and Analiza Marzan, the couple accused of severely beating house helper Bonita Baran, entered a not guilty plea on Monday to serious illegal detention charges filed against them.

The couple waived the reading of the information on the case and went straight to entering a not guilty plea during their arraignment at the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 77 under Judge Germano Legaspi.

The Marzans' lawyer, Joel Ferrer, said his clients also intend to present their children as witnesses to prove that they did not hurt their house helper.

The couple earlier claimed that it was Baran's father who hurt the complainant. They also claimed that some of Baran's wounds were self-inflicted.

The defendants have filed a petition for bail before the court. The hearing for the bail petition was set on Friday.

Aside from the serious illegal detention charges, the couple is also facing seven counts of serious physical injuries and two counts of attempted homicide in separate courts. – report from Dennis Datu, dzMM
