Exposé on gambling debt cost me my job: Gadapan
MANILA, Philippines – A Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) official who was sacked due to "loss of confidence" believes he was removed from his post because he started talking about the alleged gambling debts of his boss’ wife.
Speaking to radio dzMM, former PDEA Deputy Director General for Operations Carlos Gadapan said he was fired only after he disclosed the alleged gambling activities of the wife of his superior, PDEA chief Jose Gutierrez Jr.
“Mula po nung isiniwalat ko sa kanya, because I want to protect the agency and of course my boss, na sinabi ko po sa kanya na yung asawa niya po ay exposed na sa pagsusugal at ito po ay nagpapatalo ng daan-daang libong piso base sa impormasyong natatanggap,” he said.
Gadapan said Gutierrez’s wife owes more than a million pesos to several people, including some PDEA directors. He said the gambling debts were already affecting the agency.
Inquirer columnist Ramon Tulfo also confirmed that the PDEA chief's wife is a heavy gambler.
"The cat is now out of the bag: It’s the wife of Director-General Jose S. Gutierrez—and not Gadapan’s—who is always seen at the casino, loses heavily and borrows big money from her husband’s subordinates and friends," he said in his column published online on September 17.
In the interview, Gadapan said he is ready to face any probe to clear his name. He vehemently denied allegations that he is linked to drug syndicates.
He also lamented that he was not given due process when he was relieved from his post.
“Nakakagulat nga po dahil bigla na lang dumating yung relief order nang hindi man lang ako iniimbistigahan o hindi ko po alam kung ano po yung inaakusa o yung mga bagay bagay against sa akin,” he said.
Who needs money most?
In the interview, Gadapan disclosed that there was an operation approved by Gutierrez where a drug suspect allegedly shelled out P8 million.
On Monday, President Benigno Aquino III ordered Gadapan’s relief due to loss of confidence.
