Marzan couple eyes contempt raps vs PAO chief
MANILA, Philippines – The camp of couple Reynaldo and Analiza Marzan is planning to cite Public Attorney's Office chief Persida Rueda-Acosta for indirect contempt for issuing supposedly damaging statements about the case of abused maid Bonita Baran.
Lawyer Jess Hernandez said the statements being issued by Acosta and other witnesses in various media interviews may influence the courts' handling of Baran's case.
"We're fed up. We will be having a hearing on the other branch, I will be making a move to cite Atty. Acosta and other intended witnesses for indirect contempt. What they are doing might influence the perception of the court," Hernandez told radio dzMM.
Aside from the contempt charges, the Marzan camp said it will also seek a gag order against Acosta.
The Marzan couple is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow at the Quezon City Metropolitan Trial Court Branch 40 for serious physical injury charges.
Analiza and Reynaldo on Monday entered a not guilty plea for the serious illegal detention charges lodged against them by Baran, who lost her sight after allegedly being beaten by the couple.
The couple is also facing attempted homicide charges.
Earlier today, another alleged former house helper of the Marzan couple appeared at the PAO headquarters. Acosta said their case against the couple is already strong but the testimony of the house helper, Evalyn (not her real name), could boost their chances of scoring a sure victory.
Evalyn said she started working for the couple when she was only 14.
She said she suffered at the hands of the couple. She said she was slapped, pinched, and forced to drink a large amount of water whenever Analiza felt she did not do well her job. – with a report from Zandro Ochona, dzMM
