9 'kotong' cops go AWOL
MANILA, Philippines – Nine of 10 cops accused of extortion have gone AWOL (absent without official leave), according to the Manila Police District (MPD).
Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim said the police officers have failed to report to MPD’s Station 4 since Monday, despite his orders to summon them.
Lim now suspects that allegations that the cops tried extorting money from a balikbayan are true.
Police have launched manhunt operations and summary dismissal proceedings for the missing cops.
The cops are being accused of extortion by balikbayan Belinda Placido, who said the officers demanded P1 million from her in exchange for her release.
Placido claimed she was arrested in San Felipe, Zambales for the frustrated murder of the daughter of one of the cops, SPO3 Sonny Nosidal.
She said Nosidal, who was her long-time bodyguard, was her boyfriend. -- Report from Noel Alamar, dzMM
