MANILA  - President Arroyo announced Saturday that the Light Rail and Metro Rail Transits will remain operational for the next 24 hours to help ferry motorists affected by massive flooding in Metro Manila.

Scores of people were stranded in Metro Manila's streets on Saturday as Metro Manila experienced its worst rainfall in recorded history on Saturday morning.

Weather bureau PAGASA said tropical storm Ondoy released 341 millimeters of rain in Metro Manila in just six hours, from 6 a.m. to 12 noon. The previous worst rainfall in Metro Manila was 334 millimeters in 24 hours recorded in June 7, 1967, his report said.

Authorities have released water from Angat Dam after it reached critical levels.

The Armed Forces NCR Disaster Rescue Task Force, composed of Philippine Army, Philippine Navy and Philippine Army Disaster Rescue Task Groups, have deployed all its disaster rescue units on Saturday to all flooded areas in the National Capital Region.

"Due to the overwhelming calls for rescue from several areas in NCR, it is deemed necessary to address first areas of immediate danger, and in coordination with local governments and NDCC.
Up to this time rescue efforts are still on going together with other government agencies. NCRCOM has already utilized all its assets and resources to help in the rescue and relief of distressed people here in NCR due to the flooding brought about by typhoon Ondoy," a military spokesman said.
